Here are nine signs that your child (or you) might have a reading problem:

• Avoids reading. Does your child go to great lengths to avoid reading, offering excuses? Crying? Begging for more time or promising to do it later?
• Difficulty with speech and/or hearing at a younger age – their speaking skills are slower or less developed than their friend’s skills for instance.
• Guesses at words. Guessing is not a learning strategy.
• Substitutes words. Does your child leave out words, or substitute one word for another when they read?
• Adds words to sentences and paragraphs that are not in a reading passage.
• Has difficulty with writing and/or spelling.
• Has difficulty putting thoughts on paper.
• Has difficulty with attention and/or concentration. Their teacher may label them as either “very shy” or disruptive because they are always talking – usually asking someone around them what to do because they can’t read the directions on the board.
• Difficulty with math or number skills. Reading involves memory skills. Students who have short-term memory skills may have problems in math as well as reading.
