Tip 9: Optimize Your Day Planner: We have all heard time management experts tell us that we need to “prioritize our schedules”. Interesting idea but what usually happens is that we create a “To Do List” and then what we do not get done simply gets slid over to the next day’s “To Do List” and the “Never Gets Done Dance” begins. Sounds familiar?
How about this? Why don’t you think about scheduling your priorities? If you have a favourite day planner by all means, use it and schedule in your priorities – that way they will be on the “getter done plan”. Being an “Oh look, something shiny” type of personality, I prefer breaking my day/projects into 15 – 20 minute blocks of time. Finding a daytime that works for you that does this can be challenging so I produce my own. Click on the link at the bottom of this article, to download the version I use.
Step 10: Maximize Wait Times: This is especially important for students. Have you ever gone to a doctor’s appointment and the doctor is running late? Instead of leafing through magazines dated 2007 why not have work or in the case students, have school work with you so that you can maximize that time frame. If you have a journal or article you have to read for work make sure it is in your bag or briefcase. If you are a student and have study material on cards make sure they are with you and you can get in some quick review or extra study time while you wait. Finding these hidden pockets of time eliminates those time wasters that tend to sneak up on us from the shadows. Sometimes I think they hide in my closet.
